Community Invited to Virtually Sign a Steel Beam and Help Those in Need
The Kansas City Aviation Department and its partners Clark | Weitz | Clarkson are preparing to celebrate a major construction milestone at the New Terminal project at Kansas City International Airport: completion of structural steel operations. Workers will place the final steel beams on the project in early 2021. This milestone, known as “Topping Out”, is a hallmark in the construction industry, and is often accompanied by a steel beam signing to commemorate the conclusion of this element of work and honor the accomplishments of the craft workers bringing the facility to life.
Supporting the local community is a top priority for the Build KCI Team. As the largest single infrastructure project in the Kansas City history, the team wishes to provide the community with an opportunity to participate in this important event and help Kansas Citians impacted by the pandemic in the process.
Together with United Way of Greater Kansas City, the Build KCI team invites members of the community to add their names to one of the last beams to in the New Terminal in exchange for a donation to support United Way’s COVID-19 crisis recovery efforts in the region. The suggested minimum donation of $25, but all contributions are appreciated. To participate, members of the community can visit buildkci.com/signthebeam and click on the “Make a Donation” button. Donor names will be added to the beam prior to its installation. The campaign runs Wednesday, December 2, through noon on Friday, December 11, 2020.
In addition to community contributions, project team members Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate, Clark Construction Group, The Weitz Company, Clarkson Construction Company, Skidmore Owing & Merrill, J.E. Dunn, Capital Electric and U.S. Engineering are donating a combined $50,000 to the United Way to support their COVID-19 relief efforts.
