City Officials Tour Project Site

Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Quinton Lucas requested a construction site tour of the Kansas City International Airport New Terminal for himself and members of the City Council Transportation, Infrastructure and Operations Committee. On Monday, September 28, Councilwoman Teresa Loar, Councilman Kevin O’Neill and Mayor Lucas and staff met the Build KCI leadership team at the Aviation Department’s office building. The number of officials did not reach a quorum. On hand were Director of Aviation Pat Klein, Edgemoor Infrastructure & Development Managing Director Geoff Stricker and Development Manager Dan Moylan, and Clark Weitz Clarkson President Mark Goodwin, who served as tour guide. The team takes safety very seriously on the construction site, so the team issued the tour group Build KCI-branded Personal Protective Equipment and confirmed that all visitors had face coverings to meet pandemic safety guidelines.

The onsite tour included walk-throughs of a portion of Concourse A and the New Terminal’s headhouse structure, which will serve as the front door of the facility for departing passengers and will house ticketing, check-in and security checkpoints. The Build KCI team first provided a glimpse of the future airline operations level of the New Terminal where mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work are currently underway. When complete, the operations level will feature baggage service systems, airline offices, and the tug road.

The tour continued to the upper passenger level starting in the centrally-located retail node; from there, tour attendees were able to see ironworkers assembling and installing steel on the concourse connector to the west and the headhouse’s Y-columns and box beams to the east. The walking tour concluded in the gate area where concrete and welding work was taking place to shape the future passenger lounges.

Tour guests were able to take in the full scope and size of the project with a driving tour around both Concourse A and B as they exited the jobsite. After the tour the group met with local news media representatives.

“I’m proud of the progress we’re making on this project, which is on schedule, on budget and on track to creating one of the most impressive airport terminals in the nation,” said Mayor Lucas. “I’m proud of the diversity of our workforce, and of the women and men who are working hard every day to Build KCI for the flying public of Missouri and Kansas and those visiting our region from all over the world.”

“The Build KCI team was proud to show the Mayor and TIO Committee the great progress to date on the New Terminal, especially during the pandemic,” said Director of Aviation Pat Klein. “We have been giving the Committee updates throughout the project. This first-hand view of the facility will give them added perspective for future briefings and decisions.”
